Training Youth SRH Champions for Greater Access to SRH Services in Zomba District.
Girls Activists Youth Organisation (GAYO) and Her Liberty have joined forces to tackle the pressing need for accessible, high-quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for young people in Malawi, with a focus on Zomba District in the southern region of Malawi. Aware of the significant barriers that youth encounter when seeking these services, we are dedicated to empowering youth-friendly health providers to offer comprehensive SRH information, psychosocial support, and referral services, ensuring that young people receive the care they need.
The training sessions at Songani TDC in Zomba are currently underway, equipping health providers and youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) champions with the knowledge and skills to accurately disseminate SRHR information. A particular focus is being placed on the impact of unsafe abortion and practical approaches to providing psychosocial support and managing SRH cases. Our goal remains to empower young people to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and to enhance the capacity of health providers to deliver effective and youth-friendly services.
A Key Focus on Unsafe Abortion
Unsafe abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Malawi. By training youth SRHR champions to tackle this issue head-on, we aim to reduce its harmful impact on individuals, families, and communities. This training will highlight the need for accessible, accurate SRHR information and empower both health providers and youth to engage in meaningful discussions around sexual health, particularly in rural areas like Zomba.
The ongoing training sessions in Zomba are empowering health providers and youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) champions with essential knowledge and skills to effectively communicate SRHR information. A key emphasis is being placed on addressing the effects of unsafe abortion, alongside practical methods for delivering psychosocial support and managing SRH cases. This initiative aims to equip young people with the tools to make informed choices about their reproductive health while strengthening the ability of health providers to offer youth-friendly services.
As the training continues, we expect to see a notable improvement in access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. By empowering both health providers and youth champions with the right expertise, the initiative will enhance the quality and reach of SRH information and services for the community. Furthermore, the focus on enhancing psychosocial support and case management will ensure that young people receive compassionate, comprehensive care. This effort will also promote positive changes in attitudes and boost the skills of health providers, enabling them to better address the specific needs of young people seeking SRH services.
GAYO, Believes that every young person deserves the opportunity to prosper, and access to quality SRH services is a key part of that journey. We look forward to continuing our work with Her Liberty and other partners to make a positive, lasting impact on the health and well-being of Malawi’s youth.
