On May 3rd, 2026, the world unites to celebrate World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.” For Girls Activist Youth Organisation (GAYO), this day is both a global commemoration and a call to action. It reminds us that freedom of expression is not only about protecting journalists it is about safeguarding the voices of girls and youth who are working tirelessly to build a just and peaceful society.
Press freedom is not just about journalists it is about everyone’s right to speak, to question, and to be heard. For girls and young women, especially in Malawi and across Africa, press freedom is directly tied to empowerment. Without it, stories of injustice remain untold, voices of young activists are silenced, and communities lose the power to hold leaders accountable. When the press is free, girls’ voices matter. Their stories of resilience, innovation, and advocacy become part of the national and global narrative, shaping the future of democracy and equality.
This year’s theme underscores the powerful connection between press freedom and peace. A free press exposes human rights violations, empowers communities with knowledge, and strengthens trust in institutions. As UNESCO reminds us, “Freedom of expression is the foundation of human rights.” For GAYO, this principle is central to our mission amplifying the voices of girls and youth, and ensuring that their stories of resilience, innovation, and advocacy are part of the national and global narrative.
At GAYO, we believe that press freedom and youth activism are inseparable. Our work focuses on creating platforms where girls and young people can speak boldly about education, health, climate justice, and equality. We train youth activists in digital storytelling, collaborate with coalitions to ensure inclusive communication, and advocate for media spaces that reflect the realities of marginalized communities. By defending press freedom, we defend the right of every young person to shape their future and contribute to peace.
On this World Press Freedom Day, we call on governments to uphold freedom of expression and protect journalists, on media houses to give space to youth and girls’ voices, and on communities to celebrate truth‑telling as a pathway to peace. We also call on young people themselves to use digital platforms responsibly, amplifying stories that inspire change and strengthen democracy.
As the world reflects on the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace,” GAYO stands proudly with journalists, activists, and communities everywhere. We reaffirm our commitment to truth, transparency, and the power of storytelling. Because when the press is free, girls and youth are free to dream, to speak, and to lead and together, we shape a future at peace.
Happy World Press Freedom Day 2026!
