Building a #PeriodFriendlyWorld Why Menstrual Health Matters

Today, as the world commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day, We join individuals, organizations, and communities across the globe in raising awareness about the importance of menstrual health and hygiene under the theme: “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

Menstruation is a natural biological process experienced by millions of girls and women worldwide. However, despite being normal, periods remain surrounded by stigma, misinformation, and silence in many communities. For countless girls in Malawi and beyond, managing menstruation continues to be a challenge due to poverty, limited access to sanitary products, inadequate sanitation facilities, and cultural taboos.

These barriers often force girls to miss school, withdraw from social activities, and suffer in silence. In some cases, lack of menstrual health support affects girls’ confidence, academic performance, health, and future opportunities.

At Girls Activist Youth Organisation (GAYO), we believe that menstrual health is not just a hygiene issue—it is a matter of dignity, equality, education, and human rights. Creating a period-friendly world means ensuring that every girl and young woman can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and without shame.

To achieve this, there is a need for collective action from governments, schools, parents, communities, development partners, and young people themselves. Together, we must:

  • Promote comprehensive menstrual health education
  • Improve access to affordable and safe sanitary products
  • Ensure schools and public spaces have clean and safe sanitation facilities
  • Challenge harmful myths and stigma surrounding menstruation
  • Create supportive environments where girls feel respected and empowered

As we commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day, GAYO calls upon all stakeholders to work together in building a society where no girl is held back because of her period.

Together, we can create a #PeriodFriendlyWorld where every girl thrives with dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity.

Happy Menstrual Hygiene Day.
