GAYO at the 2026 Malawi National Youth Summit – Girls activist Youth Organisation-GAYO

GAYO at the 2026 Malawi National Youth Summit

The 2026 Malawi National Youth Summit is happening at Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe, and the atmosphere is charged with energy, dialogue, and hope. Under the theme “Accelerating Progress: Reflecting on Impact, Expanding Prospects for Youth Development in Malawi,” the Summit has brought together more than a thousand delegates — young leaders, policymakers, development partners, and private sector players, all united by a common purpose: to place youth at the center of Malawi’s development journey.

For Girls Activist Youth Organisation, this moment is more than participation; it is an opportunity to actively shape the conversations and commitments being made. Our team is engaging in sessions that highlight the role of young women in productive sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, while also pushing for stronger inclusion in digital transformation and emerging technologies. We are contributing to discussions on climate action, ensuring that girls’ voices are part of the solutions for resilience and green jobs, and we are advocating for meaningful youth participation in leadership and governance.

Why This Summit Matters

Malawi is a youthful nation, with over 70% of its population under 35. Yet, challenges such as unemployment, limited access to finance, gender-based violence, and barriers to education persist. The Summit is designed to confront these realities head-on, ensuring that youth are not just participants but drivers of national development.

As the concept note highlights: “The theme signals a forward-looking agenda rooted in evidence, innovation, and multisectoral collaboration. It challenges us to move beyond rhetoric and design actionable, scalable solutions that harness the demographic dividend not as a future promise, but as a present responsibility.”

The Summit opened with high-level engagement, as His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika presided over the official ceremony, signaling the government’s commitment to youth inclusion. Throughout the sessions, delegates are not only reflecting on past progress but are also co-creating new strategies to accelerate youth empowerment. The Youth Impact and Leadership Awards are celebrating outstanding young Malawians, the International Youth Day Commemoration is linking Malawi’s youth agenda to global conversations, and the Youth Experience Zone is buzzing with interactive, youth-led activities that showcase creativity, innovation, and resilience.

As these conversations continue, GAYO is ensuring that the perspectives of girls and young women are not sidelined but are central to the commitments being made. We are emphasizing the importance of inclusive development, where rural youth, young women, and persons with disabilities are given equal opportunities to thrive. The Summit is not just about reflection; it is about action. Every dialogue, every panel, and every commitment being made today is shaping the roadmap for Malawi’s youth development.

For GAYO, being here is about carrying the voices of thousands of girls across Malawi voices demanding equity, opportunity, and justice. As the Summit unfolds, we remain steadfast in our mission: to empower girls and young women to lead, advocate, and transform Malawi’s future.
