Empowering Youth Voices at the National Youth Council Interface Meeting
Today marks a significant milestone for the Girls Activist Youth Organisation as we actively participated in an interface meeting where the President of Malawi engaged with young people through our mother body, the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM). The event, held at the prestigious Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, brought together future leaders to discuss pressing issues affecting our nation’s youth.
A Dialogue with the President
The day’s highlight was the insightful interaction with the Malawi leader, who shared notes and exchanged ideas with young representatives. This open dialogue covered various topics, including youth participation in governance, economic empowerment, and young people’s role in shaping our country’s future. The President’s commitment to listening to and addressing the concerns of the youth was evident, reinforcing the government’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
The Role of the National Youth Council of Malawi
Established in 1996 by an Act of Parliament, the National Youth Council of Malawi is a statutory body tasked with coordinating youth work nationwide. As the registering authority for youth organizations, NYCOM plays a crucial role in fostering a cohesive and empowered youth community. Upon registration, youth organizations become affiliated with NYCOM, gaining access to resources and support essential for their development.
Our Focus Areas
NYCOM’s initiatives are structured around three major programmatic areas:
- Youth Participation and Economic Empowerment: Encouraging active youth involvement in societal and economic activities.
- Youth Reproductive Health: Promoting awareness and education on reproductive health issues.
- Research, Evaluation, and Documentation: Conducting studies and compiling data to inform youth policies and programs.
At Girls Activist Youth Organisation, we align our activities with these focus areas to ensure our contributions are impactful and aligned with national priorities.
Looking Forward
Our participation in this interface meeting has amplified our voices and strengthened our resolve to advocate for the rights and well-being of young girls in Malawi. We are inspired by the collaborative spirit and the shared vision of a brighter future for all Malawian youth.
Please stay connected with us as we continue to champion the cause of youth empowerment and leadership.
